Affected varsities seek review

Deemed universities in the State affected by the Centre’s move to derecognise them have sought a review of the Tandon committee report placed before the Supreme Court. M.K. Padmanabhan, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute, one of the affected institutions, said on Wednesday that the Centre had constituted the UGC committee and the Tandon committee to look into the functioning of the universities.

The Centre’s decision to abolish the concept of “deemed” universities came as a blow for over half-a-dozen institutions in the state that have been vying for the said status for the past two years. With the latest developments, the chances of securing deemed status for these institutes have totally nullified.Curiously, a majority of these institutes offer only professional courses such as engineering, pharmacy, MBA, MCA and M.Tech, which command a huge demand.

No deemed Universities ?

In a bid to assuage students thrown into uncertainty, government on Tuesday made it clear that not a single student of any failed deemed university would be affected and indicated scrapping of granting such status in future.
"Not a single child, not a single student will be adversely affected. Students of that university will get a university degree," HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said addressing the Social Editors Conference in New Delhi.

44 institutions to lose deemed varsity status

The Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that 44 institutions including the Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai, founded by Union Minister S. Jagathrakshakan, would lose the deemed university status as they did not meet the standards.
After becoming Minister, Mr. Jagathrakshakan has not been associated with the management of the Balaji Dental College and Hospital, the Balaji Medical College and Hospital, the Bharat Institute of Science and Technology, the Bharat College of Nursing, the Bharat College of Physiotherapy, and the Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences, Puducherry.
