Colleges in AP left in the lurch

Jan 20, 2010
The Centre’s decision to abolish the concept of “deemed” universities came as a blow for over half-a-dozen institutions in the state that have been vying for the said status for the past two years. With the latest developments, the chances of securing deemed status for these institutes have totally nullified.Curiously, a majority of these institutes offer only professional courses such as engineering, pharmacy, MBA, MCA and M.Tech, which command a huge demand.

Prominent among these are CBIT, Gokaraju Rangaraju, JBIT, MNR, Srinidhi, St. Mary’s and RGIT-Nandyal. Many of these institutions are counted among the top 10 engineering institutes in the state.
Apart from them, the Sweekar Rehabilitation Ins-titute-Secunderabad, Gayatri Vidya Parishad, Montessori Mahila Kalasala and Pulla Reddy Engineering college had also applied for “deemed” status.
The expert committees of UGC and AICTE had completed the inspection pro-cess of all these institutes in 2008 and 2009 and recommended them for the “superior” status.
Even the state government issued a no objection certificate (NOC) for this purpose.
The stage was set for according a formal “deemed” status to these institutions during the academic year 2009-10 but things changed with Mr Kapil Sibal taking over as the Union minister of HRD from Mr Arjun Singh.
Mr Sibal ordered a high-level enquiry into all the “deemed” universities and also directed the UGC to keep the new applications on hold.
Meanwhile, these institutions were expecting a positive outcome, but the Centre has decided to abolish the “deemed” concept altogether.
