Amjad Khwaja discloses airport terror plot

Amjad Khwaja, the commander of the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) terrorist outfit, who was arrested by the Chennai police on January 18, revealed on Friday plans of a deadly plot to hijack Indian planes. On account of this, all Air India/Indian Airlines flights operating in South Asia have been put on high security alert. Khwaja, who was brought to Hyderabad for further interrogations, told the Hyderabad police that the Islamic fundamentalist groups aligned to the Al-Qaeda or the
Lashkar-e-Tayyaba plan to hijack one such flight.

Affected varsities seek review

Deemed universities in the State affected by the Centre’s move to derecognise them have sought a review of the Tandon committee report placed before the Supreme Court. M.K. Padmanabhan, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute, one of the affected institutions, said on Wednesday that the Centre had constituted the UGC committee and the Tandon committee to look into the functioning of the universities.

Khwaja, it is learnt, has told the police that his main target was Chennai and the purpose behind his visit to India was also to recruit more youth for terror operations.

Mylapore Festival from 21st

Just when the music season and other cultural fests in the city are coming to a close, Mylapore is all set to don a festive look from January 21.The seventh edition of Mylapore Festival, organised by Sundaram Finance, will span across 10 venues and feature 40 events involving 200 artists.
The four-day festival would have heritage walks, cyclerickshaw tour, food street, art street, crafts bazaar, crafts workshop for children, pallankuzhi and quiz contest. The festival seeks to celebrate the heritage and cultural richness of Mylapore.

Chennai MTC travel passes becoming popular

Did you know that one ticket can provide unlimited rides on most of Chennai’s MTC buses? If you did not, you are not alone. The Travel-As-You-Please scheme is popular, but more mechanisms like common ticketing need to be introduced to incentivise the use of public transport in Tamil Nadu’s capital city.
