Jyoti Basu's last journey begins

A huge concourse of mourners today filled the streets of Kolkata as the body of Marxist legend Jyoti Basu was taken out of a funeral parlour for the last journey in a hearse decked with white flowers and red CPI(M) flags.
Led by a pilot car of the Kolkata Police, the hearse slowly made its way at around 8 am to the CPI(M) party headquarters at Alimuddin Street, a distance of two km, where a large crowd had gathered on both sides of the A J C Bose Road. CPI(M) volunteers, dressed in white, stood in attention as party flags flew in half mast as the hearse reached Alimuddin Street. Senior party leaders gave it a clenched fist salute.

Jyoti Basu (8 July 1914 – 17 January 2010) was an Indian politician, belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from West Bengal, India. He served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000, making him India's longest-serving Chief Minister as of 2010 of any Indian state. He was a member of the CPI(M) Politburo from the time of the party's founding in 1964 until 2008.

Legendary Marxist leader Jyoti Basu passes away

Legendary Marxist leader and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, died in Kolkata at 11.47 am on Sunday. Basu had been admitted to a private hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata, on January 1 and had been critically ill.
The 95-year old pillar of Marxism in India was battling for his life for the past fortnight and gradually his vital organs began to fail and today he passed away, leaving a grief stricken political world.

The blood pressure of critically ill CPM patriarch Jyoti Basu dropped suddenly late on Friday night with the hospital authorities summoning the former chief minister's family, an attending doctor said."Basu's family members were called as his blood pressure abruptly dropped. A new medicine was administered and his condition stabilised to a certain extent," Dr Ranjan Sarker, a nephrolgist on the medical board at the AMRI Hospital told reporters.

Multi-organ failure of CPI-M leader Jyoti Basu has set in after he suffered acute renal failure today, his personal physician Dr A. K. Maity said.“His condition is very critical and unstable,” Maity told reporters.
The 95-year-old CPI-M leader, who underwent a two-hour dialysis last night, was again put through the process for the second time, Maity, who is on the medical board, said.

Jyoti Basu slightly better but critical, responding to calls

Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu's health condition was marginally better Sunday though he was still critical and on partial ventilator support. The 95-year-old leader was responding to calls, doctors attending on him said.
The medical bulletin issued a little after noon Sunday said Basu's general condition was 'marginally better compared to yesterday, but still critical' and he continued to be on partial ventilator support.
