Violent clashes broke out between farmers and the police in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri region on Monday.The farmers were opposing a power plant being set up by Finolex. The company has been given permission to set up a 50 megawatt thermal plant.
Several farmers were reportedly injured in the police lathicharge that began after the protesters pulled down barricades put up to stop them.According to the farmers, pollution from the power plant would affect their mango and cashew nut crops. The region is famous for Alphonso mangoes.The farmers have been protesting against the power plant for over a year now.
