The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has barred Olympic medalist Abhinav Bindra from participating in the next two shooting World Cups.
Bindra, who won the 10m air rifle shooting gold at the Beijing Olympics, has also not been assured of a place in the Commonwealth Games in October.
The NRAI wants Bindra to attend trials like other contenders if he wants to be picked for international events. But Bindra has preferred to train abroad on his own and wants the NRAI to judge his current form based on his scores in competitions.Bindra, who won the 10m air rifle shooting gold at the Beijing Olympics, has also not been assured of a place in the Commonwealth Games in October.
The NRAI has already dropped Bindra from next month's Commonwealth Shooting Championships in Delhi. The championships are a test event before the Commonwealth Games.
NRAI secretary Baljit Sethi said the players will have to follow rules. "If we agree to his demands, then we have to accommodate many other shooters who have done well in international competitions. This is a universal rule. However big a shooter you are, you have to appear for trials. You cannot bask on past glory," Sethi told Headlines Today on phone.
