No Nuclear Plant at Pulivendula?

Jan 20, 2010

The former chief minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy’s dream power project at Pulivendula has hit a roadblock with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) raising doubts about regular supply of water to the project. The 2,000 MW nuclear power project was sanctioned to come up at Pulivendula in the backward Kadapa district on the insistence of YSR.“The NPCIL asked us to show the potential for regular water supply for the proposed project and we have submitted a detailed report. We are yet to receive a reply,” said Mr Vijayanand, the managing director of AP Genco.

The project needs more than 2 TMC ft. of water. At present, water from the Mylavaram and Brahmam Sagar reservoirs has been allotted for the project. But the existing Rayalaseema Thermal Plant (RTPP) at Maddanur also draws water from Mylavaram.
“The RTPP project was shut for three days as there was no water in Mylavaram reservoir. And the pipeline work is yet to be completed for the Brahmam Sagar reservoir. This has forced NPCIL to look for an alternative,” said a senior engineer working in the Rayalaseema thermal plant.
Water from the Pulivendula branch canal has also been mooted, but officials doubt if this will work out as water in this canal is available for only two or three months in a year.
With no firm water tie-up for the project, the NPCIL has focused its attention on the power plant at Kovvada in Srikakulam district and is to announce a joint venture with an American company soon. The 6,000 MW Kovvada power plant will be completed in three phases starting from 2011.
