RGUKT will introduce engineering courses

Jan 18, 2010
The Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) will introduce engineering courses on the lines of IIT-Kharagpur in its three IIITs at Idupulapaya, Nuzvidu and Basar from the 2010-11 academic year. This will enable the first batch of 6,000 students, who joined the IIITs in the 2008-09 academic year after completing SSC, get admission to engineering courses this year.

However, the engineering courses in the IIITs will be different from the conventional colleges. All students will have to undergo training in basic engineering courses till the third year and will be admitted to specialised branches in the fourth and final year based on their performance.
Moreover, students will have to undergo training in computer science engineering as the university was established with the objective of imparting world-class computer education.
“After undergoing common training for the first three years, we will admit students in the specialised branches,” said an official of RGUKT.
The governing council of RGUKT met on Sunday to finalise the introduction of engineering courses. It was decided to appoint Prof. R.V. Raja Kumar, a senior professor at IIT-Kharagpur, as vice-chancellor of RGUKT. With this, the university got a full-time VC after two years of its inception.
Prof. Kumar, who started his career as a member of faculty of telecommunication engineering at IIT-Kharagpur, is presently serving as a professor in the department of electronics and electrical communications engineering.
