As part of the security arrangements for the coming Republic Day parade, the police personnel are training hawkers and vendors in Secunderabad and its surrounding areas on how to identify suspicious objects and persons.
So far, about 300 people in Begumpet, Bollarum, Karkhana, Ramgopalpet, Manahkali and Market police station limits have attended the orientation programme. These areas surround the Parade Grounds — one of the focal points of the security arrangements on the Republic Day.
Bomb disposal squad personnel have instructed the hawkers on how to identify suspicious behaviour, and how to watch out for a potential suspect in the crowd. To establish a communication channel between the police and the hawkers, contact numbers of the police officers concerned have been given to the persons. The bomb disposal squad SI, Mr Naga Sai, who trained the people, said the hawkers have a well-established network spread across localities. “Since they are in constant touch with people, they can differentiate a new face from a regular one,” he added.
