The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Court in the city on Friday convicted Abdul Karim Telgi, the prime accused in the multi-crore stamp scam, and four others and sentenced them to four-year rigorous imprisonment.
As the accused have already spent more than four years in jail, they could be set free immediately provided there is no other case pending against them. But, since Telgi is involved in about 50 other offences in the country, he will not be released. The accused were prosecuted for criminal conspiracy and under sections 258, 260 and 420 of the IPC for sale and circulation of fake stamps, possession of fake stamps and cheating, respectively. Apart from Telgi and his key agent in the state, B. Sadasiva, the other accused sentenced by the court are, P. Abdul Waheed, Thomas Jacob, Badruddin, and Mohammed Yousuf Singoti.
Earlier, Telgi, who was produced in the court with heavy escort for framing of charges, pleaded guilty.
