Won't let non-Marathis ply taxis: Raj

Jan 21, 2010
MNS chief Raj Thackeray on Thursday said his party would not allow taxis to play in Mumbai if non-Marathis were given licences.
"Maharashtra is not a dharamshala for north Indians," Raj said.

The MNS chief was reacting to the Maharashtra government's U-turn on its decision that only drivers who can speak and read Marathi would get taxi licences.
A day after the decision was announced, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan clarified on Thursday that drivers also needed to know Gujarati and Hindi as these too were local languages.Raj criticised Chavan, saying: "Why was such a decision announced if he (Chavan) did not have the courage to implement it?"
