Two specialised PS to fight cyber crime at Hyderabad

Jan 17, 2010
To tackle the rising number of cyber crime cases, the state has set up one specialised police station each in Hyderabad and Cyberabad. Each station will be headed by a deputy superintendent of police rank official as station house officer. There will be two investigation teams headed by inspectors of police in each police station.
To curb the new-age crime, the special police stations will be equipped with cyber crime labs. The station will deal only with cases related to IT Act 2000 and other special laws.
As of now, there is only one cyber crime police station in the state, and the Crime Investigation Department is unable to cope with the number of complaints, ranging from e-mail hacking, SMS abuse, source code theft, credit card fraud and ‘Nigerian’ frauds.
The existing law and order police stations, which are burdened with regular Indian Penal Code and Special Act cases, are unable to take up investigation of cyber crimes. Further, these police stations do not have expertise to deal with such offences.
With the number of cases increasing across the state, the police department is also thinking of opening such exclusive police stations in other major cities like Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada very soon.
The director general of police, Mr R.R. Girish Kumar, in his request to the government has said global connectivity of the Internet made it easy for criminals to act beyond boundaries to conduct their illegal affairs. “It also enables existing organised crime syndicates to use more sophisticated techniques to support and develop networks for drug trafficking, money laundering, etc. For hackers with the requisite computer skills, a large market exists for security and trade secrets which can be accessed and transmitted electronically,” he observed in his letter.
