Telangana JAC extends deadline

Jan 29, 2010
The Telangana Joint Action Committee (T-JAC) postponed the deadline for ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs to quit from January 28 to February 7. The T-JAC took the decision late on Thursday on the request of Congress MLAs, Mr R. Damodar Reddy and Mr Basawaraj Saraiah after a five-hour meeting. However, the JAC convenor, Prof. Kodandaram, made it clear that if the Centre fails to come out with a clear statement to carve out separate Telangana, the JAC would press for resignations of the elected representatives immediately after the deadline expires.
The JAC steering committee will meet on Friday to chalk out the agitation programme till then.
“On the request of the Congress, we have postponed the deadline to February 7 to pressurise the Centre to act. The agitations will continue till then,” Prof. Kodandaram said after the meeting.
Earlier, the T-JAC was divided over the Union home minister, Mr P. Chidambaram’s statement announcing the constitution of a committee on Telangana.
While the Congress leaders welcomed the decision, the Telugu Desam, TRS, Praja Rajyam and BJP leaders described it as yet another ploy of the Centre to drag Telangana issue and save Congressmen from JAC deadline for resignations.
