Russian girl's rapist identified

Jan 28, 2010
The man who raped a nine-year-old Russian girl in Goa has been identified, the state police said on Thursday. Goa DGP B.S. Bassi said the police had identified Aman Bhardwaj as the culprit.

The girl was raped on Arambol beach on January 26. Earlier in the day, police conducted raids at various guesthouses in and around Arambol. The police have registered a case under IPC and the Goa Children's Act and are working on the clues provided by the victim's mother.
After being pulled up by Union Tourism Minister Kumari Selja, the state government has sent a detailed report on the incident to the Centre.
Meanwhile, the state's ministers have started trading charges, with the NCP attacking its senior coalition partner Congress. Tourism Minister Fransisco Pacheco of the NCP asked the Congress high command to act against ministers who were "not able to handle their portfolios".
While Pacheco declined to take names, his apparent target was Home Minister Ravi Naik of the Congress.
Pacheco said the rape incident was shameful and reflected the poor law and order situation in the state, where the Congress is heading a coalition government. Pacheco, who in the past had expressed fears about Goa being branded as India's rape capital, said: "The (rape) incidents are an insult to Goa. Why should the state get a bad name only because of the inefficiency of a few ministers?"
