Barbers at the Sri Venkateshwara Swami Temple at Tirumala will now get a special monthly allowance for working in “hazardous conditions”.
The state government has approved the Tirumala Tirupati Devastham’s (TTD) decision to provide a special incentive of Rs 500 every month for regular barbers. “There is a possibility of barbers contracting diseases from the pilgrims. They have to work in surroundings covered with hair,” said Dr K.V. Ramanachary, principal secretary to the government, for the revenue (endowments) department. There are about 350 regular barbers stationed at Kalyanakatta.
