Process of Right to Education (RTE) Act

The state government has initiated the process of implementing the Right to Education (RTE) Act, which provides free and compulsory education to children in the age group of 6-14 years, from the coming academic year.

It has also asked the department of school education to carry out a detailed mapping of existing schools to establish ‘neighbourhood schools’ as a part of the RTE. The new rules also mention the upgradation of existing primary schools from Class I-V to Class VII.

The secretary of secondary education, Mr Suresh Chanda, said a state advisory council will be established to monitor the implementation of the scheme.
