J.D. Salinger dies at 91

J.D. Salinger, the author of bestselling novel The Catcher in the Rye, passed away on Wednesday. He was 91.Salinger's son said that he died of natural causes.

Salinger, who rose to fame after the release of the book in the 1950s, started his career by publishing short stories in the 1940s.

His last collection of two novellas - Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction - was published in 1963.

His other books are Nine Stories (1953) and Franny and Zooey (1961). None of his later works measured up to the success and popularity of The Catcher in the Rye, whose principal character Holden Caulfield became an icon for several and continuing generations of readers.
