Finally, dal prices plummet

Jan 12, 2010

Prices of pulses have come down by 25 per cent in the wholesale markets with the arrival of newly harvested crop from within the state as well as Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The prices are likely to fall further in a couple of weeks with the arrival of more shipments.

Tur dal (red gram), which costs close to Rs 100 per kg in the retail market, is likely to be available from Rs 70 to Rs 74 per kg in a couple of days.
The fine variety of Tur dal is being sold at Rs 6,800 per quintal in the wholesale markets located at Siddiamber Bazaar, Begum Bazaar, Osmangunj, Malakpet and Monda market and the ordinary variety is available for Rs 6,100 per quintal. This translates to Rs 61 per kg.
“I am sure that tur dal will be available for Rs 55 in February,” said Mr Rajendra Kimtee, president of Greater Hyderabad Dal Mills and Merchants Association.
Prices of other pulses have also plunged. Minumulu (black gram) is being sold at Rs 6,500 a quintal as against Rs 7,500 a few weeks ago. It still costs around Rs 73 to Rs 75 in retail outlets.
Chanaga pappu (chicken pea) that was priced around Rs 38 to Rs 40 per kilo in the retail market is now available for Rs 29.50 in the wholesale markets. Pesalu (green gram) costs around Rs 85 in retail outlets and is available at Rs 79 in wholesale markets.
The lower prices are the result of the state governments encouraging farmers to cultivate pulses extensively.
For instance, pulses were sown in more than one lakh hectares in the state.
