Congress walks out of JAC

Jan 22, 2010
The Congress MLAs and MPs from Telangana met at the New MLA quarters and decided to form a separate committee to fight for a separate Telangana. They also decided to come out of the Telangana Joint Action Committee comprising political parties. Earlier in the day, the Congress made it clear that they would not be pressurised by other constituents of the JAC.
Annoyed by non-stop criticism by JAC members, the Congress members skipped the important JAC meeting held to decide the future course of action and instead sent the party MLC, Mr Mohan Reddy, with a letter listing out various demands.

The party was irked by continued onslaught by Telugu Desam leaders despite an agreement between all political parties to refrain from verbal attacks against each other, sources told this newspaper. The Congress members also demanded that there would be no deadlines for ministers, MLAs, MLCs, and MPs to resign, as had been demanded by student JAC members on Thursday, as this would create a constitutional crisis in the state. They also sought the convenor’s post and suggested that the JAC should have an exclusive office for its meetings.
The Congress also demanded that there should be collective leadership and that at present it looks like only one party is dictating terms to the JAC. Telangana JAC convenor, Prof. Kodandaram said the JAC has accepted the Congress’s conditions, but refused to reveal details.
Sources in the main Opposition party, the TD, said that they too are not happy with the way things are going in the JAC and said they are not willing to work under K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s indirect leadership.
